Frequently
Asked Questions
How deep is the water?

The solution within the tank is 10 inches deep, just deep enough to ensure that your body is held off of the floor
whilst floating.

What if I can’t swim?

Floatation does not require any swimming skills on your part. The density of the solution will ensure that you
will float on the water like a cork regardless of your weight or body shape.

Can the solution damage my skin?

No! The solution is made by dissolving an extremely large quantity of Epsom Salts into ordinary water. Epsom
salt baths are actually prescribed by dermatologists for the relief of certain skin complaints, and are recognised
as a traditional cure for aching joints and muscles, so the solution in which you float is beneficial , with many
clients reporting that their skin feels softer and more silky after a floatation session.

Is there a chance that I could fall asleep and accidentally drown whilst in the tank?

No! You will be floating on your back and your body will be perfectly balanced in this position. Whilst it is true
that many clients do attain a state akin to sleeping , if you were to somehow force yourself onto your front and
your face entered the water, the extremely salty nature of the solution would immediately wake you.

I am claustrophobic and I would not be able to endure being confined to a small tank.

Your floatation tank has a door which you may choose to leave open if you so desire. You have complete
control over the lighting within the tank and the room itself. There is no right or wrong way to float, whatever
feels comfortable for you is correct, but remember that you only need to stand up in order to exit the confines of
the tank. Some clients who have thought that claustrophobia might be a problem for them have quickly lost
their fear when attaining the deep levels of relaxation that the floatation experience provides.

Aren´t these tanks better known as sensory deprivation chambers?

The original inventor of the floatation tank was John C. Lilly, an eminent American psychologist who had an
interest in exploring the relationship between the mind and a body that was ¨deprived¨ of all external stimuli.
Modern floatation therapists prefer to refer to the floatation experience as R.E.S.T. ( restricted environmental
stimulation technique). You do not need to float in silence,  you may choose to listen to music of your choice or
¨power learn¨ by playing instructional or motivational audio. You may choose to float with or without light.
Remember that there is no right or wrong way to float nor any fixed set of rules that need to be followed.
Floating is an intensely personal experience and you will find that over time you will ¨tailor¨ your session to fit
your own specific needs.

What exactly happens to my body during the float?

The floatation experience is as close as we can come to creating a gravity free environment on the surface of
the planet, and indeed NASA has used floatation tanks in the training of their astronauts. The body´s senses
are rested in a way in which they haven´t been since the moment you left the security of your mother´s womb.
Research has shown that heart rate and blood pressure decrease and that harmful
stress related chemicals
are decreased. Old aches and pains are relieved as the body increases its levels of blood supply. The overall
effect is one of extreme comfort and
relaxation. It is estimated that one hour of floatation therapy is the
equivalent of several hours of sleep!

What happens to my brain during the float?

As your body begins to enter a deeply relaxed state, the brain starts to produce a theta wave pattern which is
the pattern associated with states of deep meditation. The theta wave activity may be accompanied by vivid
imagery, clear and lucid thinking and sudden insights or leaps of creativity. The floatation experience can
create for everybody the mental effects of a deep meditative state without having to learn any complicated, or
time consuming, special techniques. During this theta wave brain activity the body also produces endorphins
which are equivalent to a natural opiate, promoting feelings of happiness and joy. Floatation therapy has been
successfully utilized by those looking to overcome addiction and depression.

Is the floatation experience guaranteed to be a success for everyone?

In short the answer is no. Some people will float once and decide never to try it again. The effects of floating
will depend to a large extent on the state of your mind before undertaking the experience. Some people will be
particularly open and will understand the unique benefits that  can be achieved in just their first session, whilst
others will require multiple sessions before they start to really enjoy and appreciate the experience. Some will
view their time in the tank as nothing more than an intensely relaxing break in their stressful routine whilst
others may use the experience to explore their inner psyche in a way which can have a profound and
transformative effect on the way in which they live their lives. As we already said, floatation is a personal
experience and what is achieved by one may not be achieved by all. The best thing is to approach the first float
with an open mind and no preconceived notions of what it may or may not do for you. We like to think that the
nature of the experience itself will answer any questions that you may have.

Can more than one person float in the tank?

No, the tanks are designed for a single floater. However we do have two tanks available and couples who wish
to float at the same time are welcome to make a double booking and take advantage of our ¨
Float for 2¨
discount

How can I be sure that the tank is hygienic?

Firstly, the solution itself, because of the density of salt dissolved in it, is extremely sterile. Almost no bacteria
can survive in that environment. Just to make sure we use a small amount of Bromine ( levels of 2 - 4 parts per
million) which ensures that the water is kept sparklingly clean. We insist that all customers shower before
entering the tank, and the entire solution is pumped out and purified between each session. Our tanks and
filtration system are state of the art, and are approved for use in many jurisdictions around the world.

I am in my second or third trimester of pregnancy – is the tank safe for me and my baby?

Absolutely! Pregnant women are amongst the most vocal and enthusiastic proponents of floatation therapy,
with many stating that the tank offers them the only relief that they can find from the aches and strains of
carrying the baby. Women have safely used the tank up until just before birth, and have even developed a
special face down floating position using the arms to support the head with the elbows on the tank floor.

Is there anybody who is not a suitable candidate for floating?

You must be at least sixteen years old if you wish to float alone, younger children may float if accompanied by a
parent, but we do not allow anybody under the age of ten years old into the tanks. We also refuse entry to
anybody that we consider to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Persons suffering from epilepsy or skin
complaints are also barred and clients will be asked to submit a medical declaration when visiting for the first
time. We recommend that men do not shave immediately prior to floating as the solution can sting open pores,
but we do provide Vaseline. Apart from that, almost everybody else is a suitable candidate to enjoy all of the
benefits that floating has to offer.

Have there been any field trials conducted on the benefits of floating?

Yes. While it is beyond the scope of this brief introduction to list the various studies that have been made of
floatation therapy, clients are encouraged to conduct their own research on the subject, to see the various
hospitals and universities which have conducted trials. We think that the information that you find will surprise
you.

Why is the floatation tank fitted with audio and video playback capability?

The tanks have been used by many people who wish to undergo a course of ¨power learning¨. This technique
involves the playing of either audio or video data when a full state of relaxation has been attained, which
usually occurs within twenty minutes of beginning the float. Clients who wish to take advantage of this option
will be directed to our library of specially selected cd´s and dvd´s. Many professional  sportsmen and women
regularly use the tank as an integral part of their training regime.

Some clients prefer to float whilst listening to their favorite music rather than in silence and we will be happy to
play any cd's or mp3 files that you bring with you, or alternatively you can choose from our extensive library of
specially selected sounds.

Do I need to wear a swimming costume?

It is entirely up to you, but most people find that swimming costumes tend to interfere with the feeling of being
completely surrounded by the solution. Your tank and shower are situated in a completely enclosed room and
you are assured of absolute privacy during your session.

Do I need to bring my own shampoo and soap, or towels?

We will provide towels, soap, shampoo and conditioner free of charge, but  you are welcome to bring your own
if you wish. There is a separate area equipped with hair dryers for those who need them.

When is the best time to float?

There is no correct or incorrect time. Some people prefer to float in the morning and some in the evening.
Driftaway is open from early morning until late evening and we think that the best time to float is whenever you
get the chance!

Should I eat, or refrain from eating before I float?

If you eat heavily just prior to floating, chances are that you're going to spend much of your time listening to your
body's digestive juices at work. If you haven't eaten at all, chances are that you are going to hear your tummy
rumbling, demanding food. As in many situations, moderation and compromise is the key. Light food eaten at
least two hours before your float is probably the best solution. We do advise clients to refrain from caffeine
immediately prior to the session as this can affect the bodies ability to fully relax.

What happens if I need assistance during my session?

Each tank is equipped with an intercom link to central control, and customers will be shown how to operate the
system prior to using the tank for the first time. In the unlikely event of some special assistance being required,
our staff will be able to override the door lock. Customers have full control over their environment, including
audio and video volume controls and lighting level controls.

Can I give a floatation session as a present?

Yes! We have gift certificates available for anybody who wants to give a float session to a friend, relative or
loved one. It makes a great and very unusual gift and you are sure to be remembered for it.

How much does it cost?

A single session last for one hour and will be charged at $50, though customers can reduce the cost by
booking multiple sessions. Multiple session cards are also multiple user cards which means that if you can
get together with a group of friends you can share the cost and take advantage of the discount rate. Please see
